On ClearPoint, Tokyo support could see a small group of lightning strikes about 70 miles from their position; a few hours later it had passed through. Saito told us there had been lightning in the vicinity and we could say "We know."

ClearPoint Weather is showing highly accurate information on the weather conditions at their exact position. We can know, almost real-time: wind speed, wave height, rain, forecasts, air and sea temperature, lightning strikes within the last several hours, weather warnings, tropical storms, satellite cloud view, visibility, etc.

For the actual circumnavigation Saito will have the ability to access ClearPoint through the Iridium sat phone onboard. For this voyage we are viewing using a laptop in several Tokyo locations over broadband.

More on ClearPoint to follow in subsequent log entries.

As shown by ClearPoint Weather (below), a seasonal cyclone was developing northwest of Australia, well away from the track of BMW Nicole Shuten-dohji, 4,200 nm to the northeast. Green rectangle indicates the weather information area with the current plot at center (sailboat icon). As we move the plot, the weather information coverage area follows the boat.

Update:
We saw 6 hours later that the cyclone conditions had eased and the red symbol on the left shoulder of Australia no longer was shown.

Message to crew of Nicole BMW Shuten-dohji (received by email)

Saito-san / Vincent:
Scott, via Hunter, has been forwarding me updates on your progress. Good to hear you are working the "bugs" out of the electrical system.
How is the fishing going? any luck? Do the flying fish fly high enough to end up on your deck? What types of sea life, birds are you seeing? Seen any other sailboats or ships?
Are you having any luck catching rain water for drinking/washing??
Is the main sail in too poor of shape to use? Even when it is reefed? Or is there some other reason you are not using the main?
Was great to get to know you both. Maybe some day our paths will cross again
Bon voyage,
Erick Cramer / Honolulu

Erick and Scott Gilbert provided volunteer assistance to Saito-san during boat preparations in Hawaii. He's now been added to the updates email list.

They did have some luck with fish a few days ago, hauling in a very nice 4-foot Mahi-mahi.

The hard dodger/sun roof is a perfect rain-catcher with a hose system that allows ample water storage from the recent rains.

Nicole BMW Shuten-dohji has crossed (630 nm to the west) the latitude on which the Micronesian island nation of Kiribati (kee-ree-bahs) is situated. The name Kiribati is the local variant of "Gilberts," derived from Kiribati's main island chain, the Gilbert Islands and its former colonial name, the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiribati

***
By Tuesday afternoon, Cyclone Nicholas was back on Clearpoint but severely weakened, the reason for its sudden disappearance we reported yesterday unknown. The Feb. 17-19 track showed the cyclone as never achieving more than a Severity 1 (lowest) classification, falling to tropical storm level, then sharply reversing course and turning back south.

According to Wikipedia, the term "cyclone" refers to such storms' cyclonic nature, with counterclockwise rotation in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise rotation in the Southern Hemisphere. Depending on their location and strength, tropical cyclones are referred to by various other names, such as hurricane, typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, and tropical depression.

Meanwhile, heavy monsoon rains have battered wide areas on the Australia's northeastern coast and people are reported to be watching out for crocodiles in their flooded houses.

Weather: Clear skies; winds fair
Barometer: 1011 hPa
Waves: 2 m

Wind (from): ESE 8-12 kt, reporting somewhat adverse wind direction
Engine: Both AC and DC are charging OK. Engine smoking "not so much;" fuel filters are staying clean. Not motoring in order to conserve fuel and reduce engine strain. Running the engine about 8 hours a day just for charging.Fuel judged at about 600 to 650 gallons remaining plus 250 spare gals in drums stored on deck. The four tanks hold approx. 1600 gals. and were topped off before leaving. Some fuel consumed for motoring earlier in the voyage so cannot currently judge the depletion rate (from Tokyo, anyway) caused by running the engine just for battery charging. (Solar panels will be added in Auckland.)

Note: The four separate fuel tanks have clear transparent windows to view the fuel supply, no gauges, so estimates are approximate. As necessary, fuel is pumped from one of the other tanks to replenish the "day" tank.) The Yanmar auxiliary generator ("gen set") has its own separate, smaller tank.Sails: Under No. 1 jib (main remains furled). Saito believes tomorrow they may be able to make repairs to the main, including replacing the worn halyard.

Crossing Equator today under "beautiful" skies. Both crew sounded happy. Vincent was glad to hear the emailed well-wishes from his mother Christine and friend/relative (?) Matthieu.

That busted U.S. spy satellite was shot down about 1,400 miles NNW of Saito and crew (west of Hawaii), about the time of our last Iridium contact with them. Doubtful they could see the CNN-reported explosion from that long distance but will ask tomorrow. It would have been about sunset.

Correction!
Google Map has Kiribati located 1,750 miles east of its actual location. Thanks to Tony Whitman for spotting this error. (Now, how do we go about informing Google!?)

Here's the right location for Kiribati, according to the American CIA...

Saito accepted congratulations for passing the Equator. He said this was Equator "No. 34 or 35 for me, but No. 1 for Vincent!" (The celebratory practice by crews in the early sailing ships was a good dowsing in the bosun's chair for all Equator first-timers.)

Thanks to Bob Brumfield for his suggestion on the "Distance to Auckland" map. Will be included daily from now on.
