Courses 'R Us!

Sail Class To Start July 17

The Tokyo Sail and Power Squadron is proud to offer again its popular SAIL class. The class is open to members and non-members (but non-members will be expected to join during the class to facilitate testing and follow-up activities).

WHAT IT IS
Sail is for both beginner and already active sailors, it will give you a solid background in all the names of all the doohickies and whatsits to allow you to crew or captain your own boat with others in confidence. More importantly, it will teach you how a sailboat works--what is going on between the hulll, sails, wind, water and humans. With this knowledge, you will be able to visualize intuitively what changes need to be made to go faster, more safely and more comfortably in the various conditions a boat encounters.

WHAT IT ISN'T
It is not a hands-on, in-the-boat sailing class, but rather a supremely valuable, mutually reinforcing companion to on-the-water learning. Students may elect (and indeed are encouraged) to concurrently take a dinghy sailing class to gain the full benefits of this instruction. And, if schedules permit, we will get you out on a cruising boat at least once to put your new information into practice.

WHEN IT IS
The class will start on Monday July 12, 7-9 pm and run through September, with a two or three week break during August, to be settled among the students.

WHERE IT IS
Subject to availability, the class will be held at the new offices of White and Case LLP just outside the North exit of Tokyo Station. Maps and directions will be supplied to applicants after sign up.

More courses are always being planned. If interested in taking a class, contact our Education Officer to inquire about what's on tap for the next class.

What's Been Happening

Fickle Weather Again Foiled

Annual Hayama Sail/BBQ Held Oct. 17

Again the weather threatened, but the annual Joint TSPS/Hayama Marina Yacht Club Sail/BBQ came off. Sixteen TSPS members and friends gathered at Hayama Marina at 10 a.m. Oct. 17, greeted with the usual friendliness of the Hayama Marina Yacht Club members who volunteered to take us out on a 4 hour cruise and stop-off for lunch, followed by a barbecue at the marina. It was an overcast day with little wind, but everyone enjoyed being out on the water and had a good time eating and making merry at the barbecue. We were all also amazed at the damage done to the marina by the recent typhoon. We wish the marina good luck in repairing it. We look forward to this event next year.

3rd Time's the Charm

"Spring" Hota Cruise Finally Comes Off

After two cancellations, it was another touch and go week-end of weather, but it turned out to be OK for the trip to Hota on June 13-14. Four intrepid TSPSers showed up with their sea-going vessels and hardy crew for the cruise to the other side of Tokyo Bay. Good 12-18 knot winds prevailed on Saturday, though Sunday proved to be not as good for the sailing craft. In any case a good time was had by all on Saturday evening at the huge fish and beer restaurant there, as is usually the case. Hopefully, next time, we can have two fabulous days of weather.

They Partied and the Clouds Departed

Rendezvous Held at Velasis for 1st Time

It was touch and go on the weather for this year's TSPS Rendezvous, but the party spirit managed to chase the rain clouds away and a good time was had by all at Velasis on May 24. Kudos to the new Commander, Gary Thomas, the Social Activities director Eugen Mall, past Commander Per Knudsen and the most important person of all, the Chef, Jerry Brady, for pulling it off this year. Some folks from the far-away exotic land of the USA dropped by, too, and added some fine vibes to the goings-on.

First Hota trip of 2009

After being cancelled in April due to inclement weather, the first TSPS week-end Hota excursion was re-scheduled to May 16-17. However, again nasty weather forecasts for May 17 led to its being cancelled. However, a few people did go over to Hota for lunch on the 16th.
